Every great idea starts with a story. This is ours.
From a young age, Sheldon McCarthy had a passion for building things. For him, it’s a creative outlet that he’s always come back to throughout various stages of his life.
Over the past few decades, he’s built many different things for many different people. However, the most meaningful thing he ever built wasn’t for a customer – it was for his own father.
In the spring of 2023, Sheldon’s father passed away. His family wanted something truly special that reflected who he was, but everything they found felt impersonal. Nothing felt right.
One day, he was asked by his siblings to make the urn himself. His older brother half jokingly said: “Well, why not make it an RV?” And suddenly, that was the spark that Sheldon needed to begin his most personal project yet.
The backstory here is that Sheldon’s parents had spent years travelling and camping together in their RV. Over time, those trips became an important part of everyone’s memories. Right away, the idea stuck. It felt personal. It felt like him. It felt like it would truly honour the life he had lived.
After a lot of research, product design, and trial and error, the original RV Urn was born. Right in time for his father’s ceremony in Niagara Falls, Ontario. And the reaction was immediate.
People didn’t just notice it; they were deeply connected with it. The emotional reaction was special. For the first time, people felt that an urn was truly able to capture the person it was meant for. It was the perfect tribute to a life well lived.
After the ceremony, emails and text messages flowed with words of appreciation and awe. And that was when something shifted. If this meant so much to Sheldon’s family and friends, maybe other families deserved that same chance: to honour someone with something special that actually reflected their time on earth.
And thus, The Urn Company was born. Together with his wife Marzena and her son Justin, the team began designing urns inspired by the things people cared about in life: travel, music, faith, hobbies, memories. Not novelty pieces, but meaningful ones that were able to capture the essence of a beautiful life lived.
Today, every urn we create is guided by the same idea that started it all: Urns should be as unique as your loved ones. We’re honoured that we’re now able to share these unique pieces directly with you and your loved ones to honour their incredible lives.
